Hey,

Would something like User:Mmenal/statistiques / User:Mmenal/NUMBEROFQUOTES / User:Mmenal/NUMBEROFQARTICLES be OK ? You'll need to check the first page, especially because most of the articles listed as "0 quote" actually have quotes, but don't use {{Tilvitnun}}.

Please report any bug you'll find or any improvement/fix you want me to make, and I'll start updating these stats automatically when everything's OK. :) Manuel Menal 18. september 2007 kl. 20:30 (UTC)Reply

Can I translate any of the text? I think it looks good. We've had some problems with film quotes. The seem to get random whitespaces like Óðal feðranna. That's why so many article seem to have 0 quotes. How do you notice duplicated quotes? Do they have to be 100% the same? All in all, I think it looks good. --Steinninn 18. september 2007 kl. 21:52 (UTC)Reply
Yes you can, just translate the page and I'll add the icelandic messages to the code (there's already english and french in there).
Duplicated quotes do not have to be 100% the same: I just strip the quotes of all non-alphanumeric chars (like punctuation or wikisyntax) and check if the edit distance between this quote and the others is less than 3. Of course this doesn't catch all duplicates (two different translations of the same quote can be very different), but I've never seen any false-positive so far.
As for film quotes, I can't see random whitespaces in Óðal feðranna — or am I looking at the wrong place? :)
Cheers, Manuel Menal 18. september 2007 kl. 22:02 (UTC)Reply
Compare Óðal feðranna with Sódóma Reykjavík, the first one shows a lot more whitespace then the next one. At least on Safari. --Steinninn 18. september 2007 kl. 22:14 (UTC)Reply
Oh, I see. You seem to be trying to emulate the poem extension through {{persóna}} by adding a <br> tag at the beginning of this template. I don't think it's a good idea — you'll end up with problems like this one.
The solution is to use the <poem> tag, but you can't use it inside a template right now (it's planned for future MediaWiki versions). So you'll have to use something like :
{{tilvitnun
|kvikmynd =<poem>
{{persóna|Stefán}} Ætlar'u ekki að koma inn aftur?
{{persóna|Helgi}} Heldurðu að pabbi hefði kært sig um að hlusta á lygablaður þarna inni?</poem>
}}
At least that's what we do on fr:wq, after talking with many MediaWiki devs. I wish it was more user-friendly, but I hope it'll change soon. Manuel Menal 18. september 2007 kl. 22:42 (UTC)Reply
The feeling is mutual, I'd love to have it userfriendly. But we got to work with what we've got. Is there a bug I can vote for? Where can I read more about poem? I've never seen it. Anyway. I think I've fixed the article. Let's see what Cessator thinks about the bot and then you can get it up and running. --Steinninn 18. september 2007 kl. 23:00 (UTC)Reply
Is q:Utilisateur:RimBot/interprojet coming to? --Steinninn 20. september 2007 kl. 04:47 (UTC)Reply
I agree with Steinninn, this looks very promising. --Cessator 20. september 2007 kl. 05:10 (UTC)Reply

Okay, then I'll try to set it up as soon as possible. How often do you want the stats to be updated? In fr:, RimBot updates the template (NUMBEROFQUOTES and NUMBEROFQARTICLES) every 2 hours and the statistics page is updated twice a day. I think it doesn't need to be as often on is:, seeing your RC ; maybe four times a day (every 8 hours) for the templates and once a day for the stats? Of course, it can be changed afterwise.

As for fr:Utilisateur:RimBot/interprojet, it works on projects that use a special template for interproject links : e.g., you can see on fr:Victor Hugo that we have links to "Wikipédia", "Wikisource" and "Wikimédia Commons" just on top of the interlanguage box. My bot automatically adds interproject links (like an interwiki bot) and generates these stats. I can easily do the latter for is:, but the former will be difficult, considering I don't know the language. If one of you can run a pywikipedia bot, I can send the code, though. Manuel Menal 20. september 2007 kl. 09:11 (UTC)Reply

Let's consintrate on the quote count first. every 8 hours and once a day sounds good. Sadly we still don't have as much activity as on fr: (soon, soon...) --Steinninn 20. september 2007 kl. 15:06 (UTC)Reply
Okay, I've just set it up. Two small things : the part If the first field is N and the second M, it means M quotes appear N times (in N articles)) is not translated ; and how should I say "Updated statistics" in icelandic?
You might want to give User:RimBot the botflag so it doesn't pollute your RC.
Cheers, Manuel Menal 20. september 2007 kl. 16:38 (UTC)Reply
"Updated statistics" would probably be „Tölfræði uppfærð“. Botflag given. And thanks so much for all your help.
The French wikiquote looks so much better then the English one. The light blue and dark blue feature in talk pages looks very good. Our front page is a bit of a copy past from yours. Anything els you would recommend here from your experience at fr.wikiquote? --Steinninn 20. september 2007 kl. 16:47 (UTC)Reply

Woops, my bad — consider it as a dry run. ;) It should be OK now.

The bits I like a lot about how the french Wikiquote looks are the per-namespace background colors and the colours in the history. I also like how every quote and every reference appears the same way — every article in en: seems different from another, and I have to spend some time finding out where is the author, the name of the work…

If you're looking for a "general" piece of advice, define as soon as possible your requirements for quotes and sources — do you accept "personal" quotes, should the quote be meaningful in itself, do you accept quotes from self-published books… We've already had a few cases where people try to add their own quotes, or add too many non-notable quotes from a work (e.g. South Park or another TV show)… It's a lot easier to manage if the rules are decided before the situations arise. As for sources, well, you probably know fr: is very, very strict about sources (no unsourced quotes, all sources should provide the page number and so on), so you know my position. ;-)

Thanks, Manuel Menal 20. september 2007 kl. 23:31 (UTC)Reply

Er, Houston, we have a problem. Your main page, Wikivitnun:Forsíða, is cascade-protected, so Snið:NUMBEROFQUOTES and Snið:NUMBEROFQARTICLES, which are included in the main page, are also protected.
Maybe you should disable the cascade protection — do you really need it?
Thanks, Manuel Menal 20. september 2007 kl. 23:35 (UTC)Reply
Nope, we don't need it. --Steinninn 20. september 2007 kl. 23:37 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, stats updated. Manuel Menal 20. september 2007 kl. 23:38 (UTC)Reply

Quote of the day

breyta

Nope, that shouldn't be hard to write. I hope I'll be able to do it in the next few days — I've got many things to do IRL right now. I'll get back to you shortly. Cheers, Manuel Menal 23. september 2007 kl. 21:02 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, sorry, I thought I'd told you about it already… See Notandi:RimBot/qotd. Could you tell me how you want it to look? (right now it looks like the QOTD on fr: main page).
Maybe you could reuse our system — a main template, {{citation du jour}}, and per-day sub-templates, like {{citation du jour/30 janvier 2007}}. This way you can have a list of the previous QOTD on one of your pages (like [[:fr:Wikiquote:Citation du jour).

Forced user renames coming soon for SUL

breyta

Hi, sorry for writing in English. I'm writing to ask you, as a bureaucrat of this wiki, to translate and review the notification that will be sent to all users, also on this wiki, who will be forced to change their user name on May 27 and will probably need your help with renames. You may also want to help with the pages m:Rename practices and m:Global rename policy. Thank you, Nemo 3. maí 2013 kl. 13:34 (UTC)Reply

An important message about renaming users

breyta

Dear Steinninn, My aplogies for writing in English. Please translate or have this translated for you if it will help. I am cross-posting this message to many places to make sure everyone who is a Wikimedia Foundation project bureaucrat receives a copy. If you are a bureaucrat on more than one wiki, you will receive this message on each wiki where you are a bureaucrat.

As you may have seen, work to perform the Wikimedia cluster-wide single-user login finalisation (SUL finalisation) is taking place. This may potentially effect your work as a local bureaucrat, so please read this message carefully.

Why is this happening? As currently stated at the global rename policy, a global account is a name linked to a single user across all Wikimedia wikis, with local accounts unified into a global collection. Previously, the only way to rename a unified user was to individually rename every local account. This was an extremely difficult and time-consuming task, both for stewards and for the users who had to initiate discussions with local bureaucrats (who perform local renames to date) on every wiki with available bureaucrats. The process took a very long time, since it's difficult to coordinate crosswiki renames among the projects and bureaucrats involved in individual projects.

The SUL finalisation will be taking place in stages, and one of the first stages will be to turn off Special:RenameUser locally. This needs to be done as soon as possible, on advice and input from Stewards and engineers for the project, so that no more accounts that are unified globally are broken by a local rename to usurp the global account name. Once this is done, the process of global name unification can begin. The date that has been chosen to turn off local renaming and shift over to entirely global renaming is 15 September 2014, or three weeks time from now. In place of local renames is a new tool, hosted on Meta, that allows for global renames on all wikis where the name is not registered will be deployed.

Your help is greatly needed during this process and going forward in the future if, as a bureaucrat, renaming users is something that you do or have an interest in participating in. The Wikimedia Stewards have set up, and are in charge of, a new community usergroup on Meta in order to share knowledge and work together on renaming accounts globally, called Global renamers. Stewards are in the process of creating documentation to help global renamers to get used to and learn more about global accounts and tools and Meta in general as well as the application format. As transparency is a valuable thing in our movement, the Stewards would like to have at least a brief public application period. If you are an experienced renamer as a local bureaucrat, the process of becoming a part of this group could take as little as 24 hours to complete. You, as a bureaucrat, should be able to apply for the global renamer right on Meta by the requests for global permissions page on 1 September, a week from now.

In the meantime please update your local page where users request renames to reflect this move to global renaming, and if there is a rename request and the user has edited more than one wiki with the name, please send them to the request page for a global rename.

Stewards greatly appreciate the trust local communities have in you and want to make this transition as easy as possible so that the two groups can start working together to ensure everyone has a unique login identity across Wikimedia projects. Completing this project will allow for long-desired universal tools like a global watchlist, global notifications and many, many more features to make work easier.

If you have any questions, comments or concerns about the SUL finalisation, read over the Help:Unified login page on Meta and leave a note on the talk page there, or on the talk page for global renamers. You can also contact me on my talk page on meta if you would like. I'm working as a bridge between Wikimedia Foundation Engineering and Product Development, Wikimedia Stewards, and you to assure that SUL finalisation goes as smoothly as possible; this is a community-driven process and I encourage you to work with the Stewards for our communities.

Thank you for your time. -- Keegan (WMF) talk 25. ágúst 2014 kl. 18:24 (UTC)Reply

Your admin status

breyta

Hello. I'm a steward. A new policy regarding the removal of "advanced rights" (administrator, bureaucrat, etc.) was adopted by community consensus recently. According to this policy, the stewards are reviewing administrators' activity on wikis with no inactivity policy.

You meet the inactivity criteria (no edits and no log actions for 2 years) on iswikiquote, where you are a bureaucrat and administrator. Since that wiki does not have its own administrators' rights review process, the global one applies.

If you want to keep your rights, you should inform the community of the wiki about the fact that the stewards have sent you this information about your inactivity. If the community has a discussion about it and then wants you to keep your rights, please contact the stewards at m:Stewards' noticeboard, and link to the discussion of the local community, where they express their wish to continue to maintain the rights, and demonstrate a continued requirement to maintain these rights.

We stewards will evaluate the responses. If there is no response at all after approximately one month, we will proceed to remove your administrative rights. In cases of doubt, we will evaluate the responses and will refer a decision back to the local community for their comment and review. If you have any questions, please contact us on m:Stewards' noticeboard.
